James “Jimmy” Leonard Harper, 89, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025. Born on May 27, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama, Jimmy built a life marked by dignity, resilience, generosity, and a deep devotion to his family and faith.

Jimmy proudly served in the U.S. Army in his early adulthood before returning home to establish a long career as a machinist. Known for his steady hands and unmatched work ethic, he became a mentor to younger workers who admired both his craftsmanship and his humility. His colleagues often said that if Jimmy fixed it, it stayed fixed.

He married his sweetheart, Lorraine, in 1961, and together they shared 54 beautiful years. Their home became the gathering place for Sunday dinners, birthday parties, and any occasion worthy of family togetherness. Jimmy’s quiet humor, gentle advice, and warm smile made him the heart of every room he entered.

A man of unwavering faith, Jimmy was a devoted member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher for more than three decades. He loved fishing at dawn, watching baseball with his grandchildren, and tending to his backyard garden, where he grew the tomatoes everyone raved about.

Jimmy is survived by his children, Robert (Angela) Harper and Lisa (Darryl) Morgan; his six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his younger brother, Charles Harper. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine; his parents, Leonard and Mary Harper; and his sister, Ruth Parker.

A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held Friday, January 24, 2025, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Rest Cemetery.

Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and quiet leadership—one that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
