Jim "Captain" Smith, a cherished member of the Batesville community, embarked on his next great adventure on July 1, 2025. Born on December 16, 1974, in Batesville, Jim was more than just a name; he was a personality larger than life itself—known for his infectious laughter and heroic spirit.
In a multifaceted career, Jim seamlessly transitioned from coaching football and soccer at Batesville High School to making smiles brighter as a dentist. He truly embodied the idea of being a lifelong learner, earning his degree in Technology from Ball State University after graduating high school in 1996. Throughout his life, he was a tireless student of knowledge and always pursued new avenues to better himself and his community.
A proud veteran of World War II, Jim served his country with honor and earned the Purple Heart while in Germany—a testament to his bravery and sacrifice. Upon returning to civilian life, he dedicated himself to coaching, where he became a beloved mentor and leader. His athletes will fondly remember him not just for his strategies on the field, but for the great sense of humor that made practices feel less like work and more like a fun gathering of friends.
Outside of his work, Jim had a flair for hobbies that ranged from indulging in the cinematic universe of Star Wars and movies to cultivating his love for gardening. It was customary to find him with dirt under his nails, immersed in a world of blooms—often accompanied by the cheer of family and friends.
Jim is survived by his four children: John, Jim Jr., Jason, and Jeff, who are sure to carry forward his legacy of warmth and laughter. While he brought joy to many, his family was his heart and soul. Jim often spoke of his late parents, father Javon and mother Julie, who precede him in death, with a sparkle in his eye, sharing tales of their kindness and guidance.
His visitation will be held on August 27, 2025, at Tukios in Ogden, UT, starting at 9:30 AM, where all are invited to celebrate Captain Jim’s delightful life and share in the joy he brought to this world.
Though he has sailed into the great beyond, Jim's spirit will forever live on in the hearts he touched, the laughter he spread, and the memories created. Rest well, Captain—you’ve earned it!
