Thomas “Tom” Gerald Whitaker, 88, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, at his home surrounded by family. Born on January 18, 1937, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Tom lived a life rooted in humility, kindness, and steady dedication to both work and family.
Tom spent more than 40 years as a high-school history teacher, where he became known not only for his deep knowledge of American history but for the enthusiasm and humor he brought to his classroom. Generations of students remember his booming laugh, his stories that made the past feel alive, and his belief that every person had a place in the world worth discovering.
In 1963, Tom married his sweetheart, Elaine, and the two shared over five decades of partnership and devotion. Their home was a warm, welcoming gathering place for family dinners, holiday celebrations, and long evenings spent sharing memories. Tom was a devoted father to two daughters, a grandfather who showed up to every recital and game, and a friend who always made time to listen.
Outside the classroom, Tom enjoyed woodworking, weekend fishing trips, and tending to the garden he claimed grew “the best tomatoes in the county.” Even in retirement, he continued tutoring students and volunteering at the local library, where he loved reading to children during story hour.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Karen (Michael) Edwards and Susan (Jonathan) Reeves; his four grandchildren; and his brother, David Whitaker. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine, and his parents, Harold and Mary Whitaker.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Cedar Falls Community Church. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., with burial to follow at Oak Meadow Cemetery.
Tom leaves behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and genuine care—a legacy that continues in the countless lives he influenced.
